The Future of PSVR 2 Appears to be Uncertain

Recently, there has been a report from Bloomberg which suggests that Sony has decided to pause production of the PSVR 2 due to a surplus of unsold units. The article also mentions that the lack of engaging content has contributed to the slowdown in sales since the launch of the PSVR 2. If this information is correct, it does not bode well for the future of the PSVR 2.

According to the same Bloomberg report, shipments of the PSVR 2 have been decreasing every quarter since its introduction, as per data from IDC. A cited analyst named Yijia Zhai points out that the high cost of VR hardware is a major obstacle to its widespread adoption. This argument holds merit, as the price of the PSVR 2 headset exceeds that of a PS5 console, making it a challenging purchase for consumers in the current economic climate.

Sony recently announced their plans to potentially expand PS VR2 access for players on PC, providing a potential boost for the device's popularity and longevity. However, the current focus seems to suggest that the PSVR 2 is not a top priority for Sony. This niche and pricey accessory may struggle to receive the full support of flagship software and extensive marketing campaigns, similar to the fate of the PlayStation Vita.

The launch of the PlayStation Vita included exclusive games like a new Uncharted installment, but as sales decline, Sony shifted their attention to the PS3 and PS4 software, causing the Vita to fade into obscurity. Despite being a beloved device among fans, it never achieved significant sales numbers. It is disheartening to see a similar trend potentially emerging for the PSVR 2.

Although the PSVR 2 is an impressive VR headset, the prospect of seeing a lineup of captivating games developed by PlayStation Studios for the platform in the coming years appears slim. Despite the desire for such games, the chances of them being realized seem to be dwindling.

In my opinion , I believe that the biggest drawback of PSVR 2 is its limited selection of exclusive games. Despite the support from numerous third-party and indie developers, many of the games available on PSVR 2 can also be found on competing platforms like Meta Quest and Valve Index.
