Apple might not release another premium Vision device in the near future.
According to a recent report from The Information, it seems that Apple has decided to shift its focus away from developing a new high-end Vision headset due to a slowdown in sales of the Vision Pro. Instead, Apple is said to be working on ways to lower the production costs of components for the existing model, with plans to release a more affordable version of the Vision headset by the end of 2025.
The initial Vision Pro headset was launched earlier this year and while it has been praised for its quality, it still suffers from common flaws found in other virtual reality headsets. Furthermore, the high price tag of $3,499 and the bulky design were noted drawbacks by those who had the chance to try it at an Apple Store.
Apple is planning to release a more affordable version of its Vision headset, which is internally known as N109. The goal is to retain the high-resolution displays that distinguish the Vision Pro while also reducing the weight by at least one-third. Reports from The Information suggest that Apple intends to price the cheaper Vision headset similarly to a top-tier iPhone, which Bloomberg previously estimated to be between $1,500 and $2,500.
It seems that Apple has encountered challenges in lowering production costs without sacrificing key features. As a result, the feasibility of achieving their 2025 target with this more affordable headset remains uncertain.
The company is continuing to prioritize the development of the Vision Pro wearable device. It is scheduled to launch the headset globally by the end of June and introduce several new features with the upcoming visionOS 2 release in the autumn. However, it remains uncertain whether the company will unveil a new premium Vision device in the future or shift its focus towards a more budget-friendly product in the long run.
